Dr. Zhang Heyang
There are many causes of elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). An increased ESR can be seen in inflammatory conditions, such as infectious diseases caused by bacterial or viral infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and gastrointestinal infections, all of which may lead to elevated ESR. In addition, non-infectious (sterile) inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or gouty arthritis in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, can also cause elevated ESR during active disease phases. It is recommended to undergo timely examinations to identify the underlying cause and avoid delaying optimal treatment opportunities.
