Spinal cord injury usually refers to the pathological condition caused by loss of structural integrity of the spine due to significant force or external trauma, resulting in damage to the spinal cord. These injuries are typically severe and commonly occur in industrial or mining accidents, falls from height, traffic accidents, etc. Because of spinal cord involvement, patients often experience serious impairment of spinal cord function, including bowel and bladder dysfunction and paralysis; in severe cases, respiration may be affected, endangering life. Spinal cord injuries are often accompanied by damage to other organs, such as those in the abdominal and thoracic cavities.
