After ovulation, the corpus luteum forms and secretes progesterone in the body. If the corpus luteum functions poorly, it leads to insufficient progesterone levels in women, which clinically manifests as prolonged menstrual periods—meaning longer duration of menstruation with spotting that does not resolve cleanly. Some individuals may also experience shortened menstrual cycles. Normally, menstruation occurs once every month; however, with inadequate luteal function, menstruation may occur every 22 to 23 days, which is a sign of poor corpus luteum function.
