What causes nose heat (nose "fire")?
Disease description:
I always feel a burning sensation in my nose, with pain inside the nasal cavity and frequent nosebleeds. I would like to know what causes "nose heat" (nasal inflammation or irritation)?
Nasal burning in traditional Chinese medicine is primarily caused by deficiency of lung qi, imbalance of lung heat, and liver fire invading the nasal orifices. Treatment may include drugs that clear heat and detoxify, as well as those that ventilate the lungs and open the orifices; alternatively, traditional Chinese patent medicines that regulate qi, soothe the liver to relieve depression, and clear heat and detoxify can be used. From a Western medical perspective, nasal burning is considered a symptom of acute upper respiratory tract infection or acute rhinitis, characterized by sensations of burning, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sometimes headache or sore throat—typical manifestations of upper respiratory infections. Treatment generally involves anti-cold medications, supplemented with traditional Chinese patent medicines for clearing heat and detoxifying, or saline nasal sprays.
