Will gallstones definitely turn into cancer?
Disease description:
My mother was diagnosed with gallstones this year at the age of 55. I would like to know whether gallstones will definitely turn into cancer?
The probability of gallstones turning into cancer is not very high, but for certain types of gallstones, the risk of malignant transformation is significantly increased. If cholecystitis repeatedly occurs or persists without notable symptom relief, early surgical treatment is recommended for such gallstones, because long-term recurrent episodes of cholecystitis carry a risk of developing cancer. Additionally, even in the absence of symptoms, if the stones are relatively large in diameter and numerous, or if there is gallbladder wall calcification (porcelain gallbladder), early surgical intervention is also advised. For all other types of gallstones, close follow-up and regular re-evaluation are necessary; should any related abnormal changes develop, early surgery is recommended.
