Is it effective to administer albumin for ascites due to liver disease?
Disease description:
Yesterday I accompanied my best friend to the hospital for a medical checkup, and she was diagnosed with hepatic ascites. She is considering treatment with albumin. Is administering albumin effective for hepatic ascites?
For patients with hepatic ascites, administering albumin is usually beneficial, especially in correcting hypoalbuminemia and increasing plasma colloid osmotic pressure. As the most abundant protein in plasma, albumin plays a crucial role in maintaining stable plasma colloid osmotic pressure, as well as in transport and detoxification functions. In cases of hepatic ascites, impaired liver function leads to reduced albumin synthesis, and there may also be loss of albumin through urine, resulting in hypoalbuminemia. In such situations, albumin infusion can effectively raise plasma albumin levels, thereby increasing plasma colloid osmotic pressure, reducing ascites formation, and promoting ascites absorption.
