My neighbor's father has arthritis and recently can't bend his joints. He's always been kind to us, so I'd like to ask for help: how can sacroiliac arthritis rule out ankylosing spondylitis?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Liu Aihua
The former, upon CT scanning, showed cartilage degeneration, bone proliferation, and calcification in the sacroiliac joint, whereas the latter's CT results revealed erosive, worm-eaten-like changes in the sacroiliac joint surface. Blood tests typically show negative HLA-B27 in patients with sacroiliac joint disorders, while ankylosing spondylitis patients usually test positive. The conditions can be differentiated based on symptoms. The main symptoms of sacroiliac joint arthritis are pain in the sacroiliac region and limited mobility in that area, and the condition does not typically worsen over time.
