My second baby is about to be born, and my first child is already in kindergarten. But other parents say having a second child is more painful— is giving birth to the second child really more painful than the first?

The second childbirth is more painful than the first. Although contractions during the second delivery are stronger, the perceived pain is somewhat less than with the first child, though for most women it remains within a tolerable range. The intensity of labor pain is related to uterine contractions, as well as the baby's position and the size relationship between the baby's head and the mother's pelvis. Incorrect fetal positioning, such as occiput posterior position, or pelvic asymmetry, can increase discomfort. The duration of labor for the second child is shorter than the first; while the first delivery may take around ten hours, the second typically lasts five to six hours.
