Why can't I open my mouth when my wisdom tooth is inflamed?
Disease description:
Impacted wisdom tooth causing inflammation and severe toothache, making it difficult to open the mouth. Why does wisdom tooth inflammation cause trismus (inability to fully open the mouth)?
Why can't you open your mouth when wisdom tooth inflammation occurs? The main reason is that the inflammation spreads to the medial pterygoid muscle on the inner side of the jawbone. Since the wisdom tooth is the last tooth in the mandible, it is closest to the mandibular ramus. On the inner side of the mandibular ramus lies a muscle called the medial pterygoid muscle. When inflammation spreads to this muscle, causing it to become inflamed, it results in limited mouth opening. Therefore, early treatment of pericoronitis around the wisdom tooth is essential to prevent restricted jaw movement.
