Why shouldn't wisdom teeth be extracted during inflammation?
Disease description:
My wisdom tooth has been hurting a lot these past couple of days. The doctor said it's due to inflammation of the wisdom tooth. May I ask why an inflamed wisdom tooth cannot be extracted?
It is not advisable to extract wisdom teeth during inflammation, primarily for the following reasons:
1. When a wisdom tooth is inflamed, the infection may have already spread to surrounding tissues such as the jawbone and soft tissues. Extracting the tooth at this stage could exacerbate the spread of inflammation, increase the risk of infection, and even lead to systemic infection.
2. The gum tissue around an inflamed wisdom tooth is typically congested and swollen, with increased vascular fragility. This makes blood vessels more prone to rupture during extraction, leading to excessive bleeding and additional surgical risks.
3. Inflammation can interfere with the normal healing process of the surrounding tissues. Following extraction, this may result in delayed wound healing and a higher risk of infection and other complications.
4. Inflammation in the surrounding tissues may impair the effectiveness of local anesthesia, making the extraction procedure more difficult and risky, including increased pain during or after surgery.
Therefore, when a wisdom tooth is inflamed, it is essential to first control the inflammation. Tooth extraction should only be considered after the inflammation has subsided, to ensure surgical safety and optimal patient recovery.
