Why do children develop nasal polyps?
Disease description:
We don't know why our child developed nasal polyps, and we're worried it might affect him. Why do children develop nasal polyps?
Pediatric nasal polyps are caused by rhinitis, inflammatory stimulation, and other factors. In children, nasal polyps are often associated with allergic rhinitis or chronic rhinitis; long-term inflammation can lead to polypoid hyperplasia of the nasal mucosa. Nasal polyps represent a chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, commonly occurring in the middle nasal passage or the ostiomeatal complex. Polyp-like tissue may obstruct all nasal passages, preventing drainage of secretions from the sinuses and leading to sinusitis.
