Causes of metabolic alkalosis include
Disease description:
Recently, I went to the hospital due to physical discomfort and was diagnosed with metabolic alkalosis by the doctor. I'm not sure what caused it. Could you please tell me what are the possible causes of metabolic alkalosis?
Metabolic alkalosis is generally caused by loss of hydrogen ions from body fluids or an increase in bicarbonate. Examples include prolonged gastric decompression, frequent vomiting following pyloric obstruction, and increased renal tubular excretion of hydrogen ions in hypokalemia. Additionally, administration of large amounts of alkaline drugs, or use of mercurial diuretics or ethacrynic acid sodium, can lead to increased reabsorption of bicarbonate ions. Treatment involves addressing the underlying condition, correcting volume depletion or hypochloremia with normal saline, and supplementing potassium when deficient.
