Why does cirrhosis lead to metabolic alkalosis?
Disease description:
After being diagnosed with cirrhosis, I have now developed metabolic alkalosis. Why does cirrhosis cause metabolic alkalosis?
The main causes of metabolic alkalosis resulting from cirrhosis include:
1. **Decline in liver function**: Cirrhosis leads to reduced synthesis of proteins by the liver. Hypoproteinemia easily results in hepatic ascites, causing excessive loss of acidic substances and relatively increased intake of alkaline substances.
2. **Gastrointestinal dysfunction**: Cirrhosis affects gastrointestinal motility, leading to food retention and indigestion, thereby disrupting acid-base balance.
3. **Medication effects**: Certain drugs used in the treatment of cirrhosis may impair liver function, preventing effective clearance of alkaline substances from the body.
