How to determine the presence or absence of metabolic acidosis

Metabolic acidosis can generally be diagnosed based on pH value, symptoms, and other factors. Acidosis should be suspected if the pH is below 7.35; metabolic acidosis is indicated when standard bicarbonate levels are within the normal range. Metabolic acidosis should be considered in patients presenting with severe diarrhea, enteric fistula, or ureterosigmoidostomy, especially if they also exhibit rapid breathing.
