What causes hyperprolactinemia?
Disease description:
My menstrual cycle has been irregular recently. After a hospital checkup, the doctor diagnosed it as hyperprolactinemia. I would like to know what causes hyperprolactinemia?
Hyperprolactinemia is generally caused by physiological factors, medication-related factors, and other reasons. Physiological factors include eating, sleeping, running, sexual activity, or stimulation of the breasts, all of which may lead to elevated prolactin levels. Medication-related factors include antipsychotic drugs, estrogen-containing medications, prokinetic agents, and certain Chinese herbal supplements. Examples such as oral contraceptives, domperidone, and cimetidine may also cause increased prolactin levels.
