Is a chocolate cyst an ovarian cyst?
Disease description:
Recently, I've been hearing a lot about chocolate cysts and ovarian cysts. They both seem to be types of cysts— is a chocolate cyst the same as an ovarian cyst?
Chocolate cysts may be a type of ovarian cyst. A chocolate cyst refers to an ovarian endometrioma, which is an endometrial cyst caused by endometriosis in the ovary. It usually appears as a single or multiple cysts of varying sizes. Because of its dark brown, chocolate-like appearance, it is commonly known as a chocolate cyst. If an ovarian cyst is caused by the aforementioned condition or presents with the mentioned symptoms, it is likely a chocolate cyst.
