Disease description:

I am a 23-year-old female who noticed during my menstrual period that instead of fluid, my menstrual flow consisted of clots. This confused me greatly and made me very anxious, so I went to the hospital for an examination. What could be the reason for having blood clots during menstruation?

The presence of blood clots during menstruation may be due to physiological or pathological factors. Under normal circumstances, a woman's menstrual flow ranges from 20 to 80 ml. When menstrual blood flows out rapidly or in large amounts, plasmin may not fully act on all the expelled blood, resulting in small blood clots during menstruation. If the menstrual volume is around 80 ml, with a regular cycle and no anemia, it is generally safe to observe without excessive treatment. Endocrine disorders—such as anovulatory dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence, declining ovarian function during perimenopause, or thyroid dysfunction—can lead to increased menstrual flow and the formation of menstrual blood clots.
