What does it mean if there are large blood clots during menstruation?
Disease description:
My recent period has started, but I've noticed large blood clots in my menstrual flow. I haven't had sexual intercourse recently, so why is this happening? What does it mean when your period consists entirely of large blood clots?
Large blood clots during menstruation may result from menorrhagia (excessively heavy menstrual bleeding) or rapid menstrual flow. Under normal physiological conditions, thrombin is present in menstrual blood to help coagulate the blood. At the same time, plasmin dissolves the clotted blood, keeping menstrual fluid in a liquid form. When menstrual flow is excessive or expelled too quickly, plasmin may be insufficient to break down all the discharged blood, potentially leading to the presence of small blood clots in menstrual flow. If there are no other discomforts, no symptoms of anemia, and the menstrual cycle is regular, special treatment or observation is usually not necessary. Patients are advised to maintain a light diet, avoid spicy and irritating foods, abstain from smoking and alcohol, follow a regular sleep schedule, and avoid staying up late.
