Disease description:

After giving birth to my first child, I had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted without having a previous pregnancy. However, my menstrual cycle has become irregular lately. I would like to know whether it's normal to have heavy menstrual bleeding after getting an IUD. Is it normal to experience increased menstrual flow after IUD insertion?

Heavy menstrual bleeding after IUD insertion is normal. It results from increased intrauterine pressure, leading to heavier menstrual flow, which is a normal physiological phenomenon and does not require special treatment. In most cases, symptoms resolve spontaneously by the next menstrual cycle. However, if excessive menstrual bleeding persists beyond three menstrual cycles after IUD placement, it may be due to infection or the body's rejection of the device. If caused by infection, anti-infective treatment with oral cephalosporins, quinolones, and tinidazole is recommended.
