Can I take atorvastatin calcium tablets if I have high blood sugar?
Disease description:
I've recently been having poor control of high blood sugar and am considering switching to atorvastatin calcium tablets. Is it safe to take atorvastatin calcium tablets when blood sugar is high?
Patients with high blood sugar are not advised to take atorvastatin calcium tablets to control blood glucose. Atorvastatin calcium is primarily used for lipid-lowering and does not have a hypoglycemic effect. Moreover, it may adversely affect insulin secretion and glucose metabolism, potentially leading to elevated blood sugar levels with long-term use. If changing antidiabetic medications, patients may consider alternatives such as metformin or glimepiride.
