The exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is currently unknown, but it is generally believed to be related to both environmental and genetic factors. For unmarried girls diagnosed with PCOS, short-term oral contraceptives such as Diane-35 or Climene may be taken under a doctor's guidance to help improve symptoms. If insulin resistance is present, metformin can be used. Additionally, ovulation-inducing medications such as letrozole or clomiphene may also be prescribed.
