If nasal congestion and excessive nasal discharge are caused by the common cold due to upper respiratory tract infection, medications for cold relief can be used as directed by a physician. Commonly used drugs include acetaminophen, pseudoephedrine, dextromethorphan, and chlorpheniramine tablets, or compound preparations such as acetaminophen, caffeine, and chlorpheniramine capsules. If symptoms are due to allergic rhinitis, antihistamines such as loratadine or cetirizine may be used. Additionally, intranasal corticosteroid sprays—such as budesonide nasal spray or mometasone furoate nasal spray—can be used in combination for better control.
