Disease description:

Today, while applying makeup and wearing colored contact lenses, I noticed that the whites of my eyes appeared slightly yellowish and somewhat dull—I really don’t like it. Could you please explain what causes yellowing of the sclera?

Dr. Cui Xin
Hello, yellowing of the sclera (the white part of the eye) is typically caused by abnormally elevated levels of bilirubin in the body. It may also indicate underlying liver disease, cholestasis (bile flow obstruction), or anemia—all of which can adversely affect overall health. Scleral yellowing may stem from physiological causes—such as certain medications, eye strain, or environmental irritants—which often improve with lifestyle adjustments. In contrast, pathological causes generally require medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital. To support eye health, ensure adequate sleep and consume foods beneficial for vision. I hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health!
