Disease description:
What is the normal thickness of the gallbladder wall?
The normal thickness of the gallbladder wall is one of the important indicators for assessing gallbladder health. Under normal circumstances, the gallbladder wall measures between 1 and 2 millimeters in thickness, with most individuals having a wall thickness of 1 millimeter and a uniformly smooth inner surface. The gallbladder wall performs several functions, including participating in the secretion, storage, and concentration of bile, which aids in digestion and absorption of food. If ultrasound or other imaging examinations reveal a gallbladder wall thickness exceeding 3 millimeters, this may indicate abnormalities such as chronic cholecystitis or gallbladder adenomyomatosis. In such cases, patients may experience symptoms including abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting; in severe cases, jaundice and fever may even occur.
