Disease description:
What are the symptoms of rheumatic heart disease?
Symptoms of rheumatic heart disease:
1. Chest pain: A relatively common symptom, characterized by a heavy, oppressive sensation lasting about ten minutes. It may resolve spontaneously but is prone to recurrence.
2. Angina pectoris: Present in some patients, with pain intensity potentially increasing with age and severity of valve involvement.
3. Dizziness or syncope: Duration varies, ranging from one minute to over half an hour. Some patients may have associated Adams-Stokes syndrome or arrhythmias.
4. Dyspnea: Initially often exertion-induced; as heart failure progresses, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea may develop.
5. Excessive sweating and palpitations: Caused by enhanced myocardial contractility and arrhythmias. Sweating commonly occurs following episodes of palpitations.
