Can you do exercises such as planks if you have pelvic inflammatory disease?
Disease description:
I've been feeling unwell recently, with increased vaginal discharge. I was diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease and am currently undergoing treatment. I'd like to know if it's okay to do exercises such as planks during this time.
Patients with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) should be particularly cautious when choosing physical activities. Exercises such as planks are generally not recommended for individuals with PID. These types of exercises require strong core muscle strength and stability, which may exert pressure on the abdominal and pelvic regions, potentially worsening PID symptoms or causing the inflammation to spread.
Specifically, patients should avoid strenuous activities such as sprinting, jumping, playing ball games, and any exercise that requires maintaining a fixed posture for prolonged periods, such as mountain climbing or long-duration cycling. Such activities may increase the risk of pelvic congestion and exacerbate the condition.
Instead, PID patients can opt for gentle and low-impact exercises such as yoga, walking, and tai chi. These activities can help enhance immune function without placing excessive strain on the pelvis, thus supporting recovery from pelvic inflammatory disease. Additionally, patients should ensure adequate rest and avoid overexertion to maintain optimal physical health.
