Sequelae of rib fracture
Disease description:
Recently, my friend got into a fight after getting drunk and suffered rib fractures. He's very worried about potential complications. Could you please tell me what complications may occur after rib fractures?
Complications that may arise from rib fractures mainly include the following aspects:
1. Intercostal neuralgia: If treatment is delayed or inappropriate after fracture, intercostal neuralgia may develop, causing patients to experience soreness and discomfort, especially during rainy or humid weather.
2. Hemorrhage and pneumothorax: The fractured bone ends may puncture the intercostal arteries and veins, leading to bleeding and potentially causing pneumothorax, particularly if treatment is not timely.
3. Malunion: Simple fractures or displaced fractures that are not promptly surgically reduced may result in malunion, affecting both appearance and function.
4. Thoracic pain: After fracture healing, some patients may still experience pain during coughing or deep breathing.
5. Loss of work capacity: Severe rib fractures, if not effectively treated, may lead to loss of labor capacity and even impair the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living.
