How long does it take for a rib fracture to heal?
I accidentally fell and ended up with a rib fracture. Now, whenever I move or cough, the area around the rib is severely painful. So, generally, how long does it take for a rib fracture to heal?

The recovery time for rib fractures varies from person to person, primarily depending on the severity of the fracture, the individual's overall health, and age.
If it is a simple, single rib fracture without significant displacement or complications, the typical recovery period is about 2 to 3 months. During this time, the fracture site undergoes a series of changes, starting with the formation of a hematoma, followed by the appearance of fibrous callus, and finally the formation of bony callus, completing the process of bone healing.
If multiple ribs are fractured or if there is associated lung injury, the recovery period will be longer, possibly lasting several months. In such cases, surgical treatment may often be required—for example, open reduction and internal fixation can stabilize the fracture site, while closed thoracic drainage can treat hemopneumothorax. After surgery, patients must undergo a period of rehabilitation and careful care to promote bone healing and functional recovery.
During the bone healing period, strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects should be avoided.
