Disease description:

I'm already over six months pregnant, and recently the baby has been hiccupping frequently in my womb. Is it normal for a fetus to hiccup so often inside the uterus?

It is normal for a fetus to hiccup frequently in the womb. This mainly occurs when the fetus swallows amniotic fluid, which may cause spasms of the diaphragm, stimulating it and resulting in hiccups. This process is a way for the fetus to enhance lung respiratory capacity and supports lung development. Pregnant women need not worry excessively, as this hiccupping will gradually decrease as the fetal lungs mature. However, if fetal movements become unusually frequent, timely fetal heart rate monitoring is recommended to prevent symptoms of oxygen deprivation. It is advised that pregnant women maintain a balanced diet, consume adequate high-protein foods, drink plenty of warm water, and attend regular prenatal checkups to ensure healthy fetal development. Any discomfort or concerns should be promptly discussed with a healthcare provider.
