Hiccups, medically known as singultus, are usually caused by involuntary spasms of the diaphragm muscle. Hiccups may be transient or persist for a period of time. Common causes include:

1. Swallowing excess air: Eating too quickly, drinking carbonated beverages, or ingesting large amounts of air while talking may cause hiccups.

2. Stomach irritation: Overeating, consuming food that is excessively hot or cold, drinking alcohol, or eating spicy foods can trigger hiccups.

3. Abnormal nerve reflexes: In some cases, the brain sends incorrect signals that trigger spasms of the diaphragm muscle.

4. Emotional factors: Stress, excitement, or anxiety may also induce hiccups.

5. Certain diseases: Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, pneumonia, brain injury, or tumors may sometimes be accompanied by hiccups.

If hiccups persist for a prolonged period, interfere with daily life, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, vomiting, or weight loss, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
