What are the reasons a fetal Doppler cannot detect the fetal heartbeat?
Disease description:
Today when I went to the hospital for a checkup and used a fetal Doppler, I couldn't hear the fetal heartbeat. What are the possible reasons why a fetal Doppler cannot detect the fetal heartbeat?
There may be several reasons why a fetal Doppler fails to detect the fetal heartbeat. If monitoring is performed too early, such as within 60 days of pregnancy, the fetal heart may not have formed yet or the heartbeat may be too weak to detect. The location of the fetal heart changes throughout pregnancy; if the position of the fetal heart or fetal presentation is unknown, improper placement of the Doppler probe may result in failure to detect the heartbeat. Other factors that may affect detection include fetal demise, congenital heart defects, abnormal amniotic fluid levels, and excessive maternal abdominal fat. For example, in cases of fetal demise, the heartbeat has stopped; fetal heart defects or abnormal amniotic fluid levels can reduce the strength and clarity of the fetal heart sounds; and excessive maternal abdominal fat may interfere with proper contact between the Doppler probe and the fetus. It is recommended to follow proper operating procedures when using a fetal Doppler, and any concerns should be promptly evaluated by a healthcare professional.
