What's the problem if I feel like defecating but can't?
Disease description:
I've been feeling the urge to defecate recently but can't pass stool. I'm not sure what's causing it. Could you please explain why someone might feel the need to go but be unable to?
The inability to defecate despite the urge may be caused by the following reasons:
1. Constipation: Mainly due to slow movement of stool through the intestines, prolonged intake of refined foods, or insufficient dietary fiber in the gut. Patients may also experience symptoms such as hard stools and hemorrhoids.
2. Insufficient gastrointestinal motility: Commonly seen in conditions such as chronic gastritis, gastric ptosis, and gastric ulcers, presenting with symptoms like indigestion, diarrhea, and vomiting.
3. Abnormal sphincter contraction: May result from improper closure of the pylorus, causing food to rapidly enter the small intestine and overloading its function, thereby leading to difficulty in bowel movements.
For the above conditions, improvements can be achieved through dietary adjustments, increased physical activity, and medication. If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
