Disease description:

I'm 16 weeks pregnant. During my ultrasound today, the doctor suggested I book a 4D ultrasound appointment earlier. I would like to know when is the best time to have a 4D ultrasound?

Dr. Zhao Xiaodong
The optimal time for a 4D ultrasound scan is generally between 22 and 26 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, the fetus's organs have largely developed, amniotic fluid levels are adequate, and fetal movement is good, allowing for clearer three-dimensional images of the fetus within the uterus and better assessment of the development of various systems and organs. A 4D ultrasound can not only visualize the development of the fetal skull, spine, limbs, and internal organs, but also detect abnormalities such as anencephaly, organ absence, congenital heart defects, spina bifida, cleft lip and palate, and limb deformities, facilitating early detection and intervention. Additionally, due to variations in fetal development rates and individual differences among pregnant women, the exact timing of the scan should be determined based on medical advice and individual circumstances.
