Using glycerin enema (Kai Sai Lu) is effective for constipation. As a commonly used laxative, glycerin enema works primarily by softening stool, stimulating intestinal motility, and lubricating the intestines. Its main ingredients include glycerin, sorbitol, and magnesium sulfate, which help increase moisture in the intestines, soften the stool, and facilitate easier bowel movements. Glycerin, in particular, has a high osmotic pressure, creating a hypertonic environment in the intestine that stimulates peristalsis and promotes defecation. When using glycerin enema, it is recommended to lie on your side or in a prone position, insert the nozzle into the rectum, and squeeze the liquid inside. Retain the solution for 5–10 minutes before evacuating the bowels. However, it should be noted that glycerin enema is not a long-term solution; frequent use may lead to weakened bowel function and habitual constipation. It is advisable to adjust dietary habits while using glycerin enema, such as increasing dietary fiber intake, to address constipation at its root cause. Patients with concerns should seek timely medical advice.
