Generally, patients with constipation can eat apples, but they should consume them in moderation.

Apples are rich in both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, which work together to increase stool volume, soften its texture, and stimulate intestinal motility. When combined with water, they swell and form a gel-like substance that absorbs water, promotes gut microbiota metabolism, and produces short-chain fatty acids, thereby enhancing colonic smooth muscle contractility. This mechanical stimulation of the intestinal wall accelerates stool transit speed and shortens colonic transit time.

The organic acids in apples, such as malic acid and citric acid, can lower intestinal pH, inhibit the proliferation of harmful bacteria, and promote the growth of probiotics such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, thus improving the intestinal microecology and indirectly alleviating constipation. However, apples should be consumed in moderation, as excessive intake may increase gastrointestinal burden and cause discomfort.

Constipated patients are advised to include apples in their diet in moderation, along with other fiber-rich foods such as vegetables and whole grains, and to maintain adequate fluid intake and appropriate physical activity to jointly promote intestinal health. While adjusting dietary habits, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and sufficient water consumption.
