What causes itching in the anal area?
Disease description:
I've recently been experiencing persistent itching inside my anus, so much that I constantly feel the urge to scratch it. What could be causing this anal itching?
Itching in the anus, also known as pruritus ani, may be caused by various factors. It could result from conditions affecting the anorectal area and perineum, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures; inflammation and increased secretions associated with these conditions can irritate the anus and cause itching. Skin disorders near the anus, such as eczema or sexually transmitted infections, can also lead to anal itching. The presence of parasites like pinworms, especially during nighttime when they migrate to lay eggs, may cause discomfort. Dietary factors, such as consumption of spicy foods, allergic reactions to certain foods or medications, and psychological factors like excessive excitement or depression, can all act as triggers for anal itching. Therefore, when anal itching occurs, multiple potential causes should be considered, and medical evaluation and treatment should be sought promptly if necessary.
