Dr. Guo Huijie
Pediatric mumps is primarily caused by the mumps virus, an acute respiratory infectious disease that peaks during winter and spring. This virus leads to acute non-suppurative swelling of the salivary glands in children. Besides the mumps virus, other viruses such as Coxsackie virus group A and parainfluenza virus may also cause mumps. The severity of the disease varies among individuals. In general, pediatric mumps mainly presents as mild swelling and pain in the salivary glands, possibly accompanied by mild symptoms such as low-grade fever and fatigue, indicating a relatively mild condition. However, the mumps virus may affect other organs, leading to serious complications such as meningitis, pancreatitis, orchitis, or oophoritis. These complications can cause significant discomfort in children and may even result in long-term physical damage. Parents should closely monitor their child's condition and seek medical attention promptly if any symptoms arise.
