What tests are needed to diagnose ADHD in children?
Disease description:
My child has been showing signs of carelessness and procrastination. I suspect it might be caused by ADHD. What tests are needed to diagnose childhood ADHD?
Diagnosing childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) requires a series of examinations.
1. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a common and important test. By recording spontaneous brain electrical activity at rest, EEG can detect abnormalities in children with ADHD; approximately 50% of children with ADHD show abnormal EEG findings.
2. Behavioral tests are also crucial for diagnosis, including the finger-tapping test, finger-to-nose test, and hand-turning test. In the finger-tapping test, the child's ability to perform rapid and flexible movements is observed; in the finger-to-nose test, movement coordination and speed are evaluated; in the hand-turning test, aspects such as elbow swing amplitude and hand-turning posture are examined. By integrating the results of these tests, doctors can more accurately determine whether a child has ADHD.
