Dacryocystitis is a common eye disease, typically presenting in either chronic or acute forms, with the chronic type being more prevalent. It primarily arises from prolonged conditions such as trachoma, chronic conjunctivitis, or chronic rhinitis, which affect the mucous membrane of the nasolacrimal duct, leading to its obstruction. Once blocked, tears cannot drain properly, creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth and subsequent inflammation. Symptoms of dacryocystitis include excessive tearing, increased eye discharge, and sometimes swelling and tenderness of the preauricular and submandibular lymph nodes. Dacryocystitis may also develop secondary to inflammation in adjacent tissues, such as the conjunctiva, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses, or due to specific infections like tuberculosis or syphilis. Treatment options mainly include medication, lacrimal irrigation, and surgical intervention. Seek prompt medical attention for severe cases.
