Is ankylosing spondylitis hereditary?
Disease description:
My wife had ankylosing spondylitis before marriage. Now that we're married, we want to have a child, but we're worried about genetic inheritance. Does ankylosing spondylitis run in families?
Studies show that ankylosing spondylitis has a genetic predisposition, but the exact pattern and probability of inheritance are not yet fully understood.
Some studies suggest that the heritability of ankylosing spondylitis is approximately 5% to 10%, while other data indicate a genetic likelihood as high as 20% to 30%. Notably, the HLA-B27 gene is closely associated with the development of ankylosing spondylitis, and individuals who are HLA-B27 positive have a higher incidence of the disease. Furthermore, the clustering of ankylosing spondylitis within families supports its genetic component. Although genetic factors play a significant role in the onset of ankylosing spondylitis, environmental factors and individual differences may also contribute.
Therefore, individuals with a family history should remain vigilant and undergo regular screenings.
