The child from my boyfriend's relative's family is experiencing severe pain and has slightly swollen gums. I'd like to ask the doctor: can a child's oral ulcer cause gum swelling?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Guo Huijie
Oral ulcers and gum swelling in children are two different oral conditions, but they may sometimes occur simultaneously. Oral ulcers themselves usually do not cause gum swelling. Oral ulcers primarily affect the oral mucosa, appearing as round or oval shallow sores that may cause pain and discomfort, but generally do not directly lead to gum swelling. It should be noted that in certain cases, oral ulcers and gum swelling may coexist. For example, when a child has herpetic gingivostomatitis, the oral mucosa may become widely inflamed and swollen with blister formation. These blisters easily rupture, forming ulcers, and are often accompanied by gum swelling. In addition, gingivitis may also cause congestion, swelling, and erosion of the oral mucosa, leading to superficial ulcers along with gum swelling and pain. If a child experiences symptoms of oral ulcers and gum swelling, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly so that a doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment based on the specific condition.
