What to do if a child has a fever of 39°C
Disease description:
My younger brother has a fever of 39°C today and is in very poor spirits. What should I do when a child has a fever of 39°C?
When a child's fever reaches 39°C, it is considered a high fever and requires immediate management to prevent febrile seizures. The following measures should be taken:
1. Physical cooling: Reduce clothing, lower the ambient temperature (e.g., by turning on air conditioning and maintaining room temperature at 25–27°C), give a lukewarm bath, or wipe the body with lukewarm water to help dissipate heat.
2. Hydration: Encourage the child to drink plenty of fluids to accelerate circulation, promote metabolism, and aid in heat dissipation.
3. Use of cooling patches: Apply fever-reducing patches to the forehead, temples, neck, armpits, and groin areas to help lower body temperature.
4. Medication: Under medical guidance, antipyretic medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be used. If the fever persists for 4–6 hours after taking the medication, a second dose may be given, but no more than four doses should be administered within 24 hours.
If the child's high fever persists and their mental state deteriorates, prompt medical attention is necessary to identify the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment.
