Can "heatiness" cause yellow semen?
Disease description:
Recently, I've been under a lot of stress and have severe internal heat ("shang huo"). My wife noticed that my semen has turned yellow. I'm wondering, can "shang huo" cause semen to turn yellow?
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), "excess internal heat" (shang huo) may cause yellowish semen. This is mainly because when there is excess internal heat, the body's internal environment changes—such as accelerated blood circulation and inflammatory responses—which may affect the color of semen. In particular, when excess heat due to kidney yin deficiency occurs, it might indirectly lead to yellowish semen, although this situation is relatively uncommon.
From a Western medicine standpoint, yellowish semen is mostly attributed to inflammatory conditions, such as prostatitis. Additionally, prolonged abstinence, failure to ejaculate regularly, chronic sleep deprivation, and high stress levels may also contribute to yellowish semen; these factors are not directly related to "internal heat" in the TCM sense.
When abnormal semen color is noticed, it is recommended to seek medical advice promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
