Is acute suppurative parotitis contagious?
Disease description:
I have been diagnosed with acute suppurative parotitis. May I ask if acute suppurative parotitis is contagious?
Acute suppurative parotitis is not contagious. It is an acute inflammatory condition of the parotid gland caused by pyogenic pathogens. Common causative bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus and streptococci. This condition is usually not infectious and does not transmit the disease to healthy individuals through contact or other means. Its development is often associated with severe systemic diseases, postoperative conditions, or prolonged fever and dehydration, which lead to decreased overall and local resistance in the parotid gland, allowing pathogenic bacteria from the oral cavity to cause retrograde infection of the parotid gland. Therefore, for patients with acute suppurative parotitis, there is no need to be concerned about its contagiousness; however, it is important to actively treat the underlying conditions to alleviate symptoms of the parotitis.
