When the skin is scalded, the treatment should be prompt and appropriate. The heat source, such as hot liquid or flame, should be removed immediately to avoid further injury. Next, rinse the affected area with cold water for at least half an hour, or apply cold compresses to reduce skin temperature and minimize tissue damage. Gently wrap the wound with a clean towel or sterile gauze to prevent secondary trauma and infection. If the scald is severe, such as when the skin peels off or large blisters appear, seek immediate medical attention and have it treated by a professional physician. Prior to seeing a doctor, avoid applying any ointments or powders to prevent worsening the risk of infection. Maintaining a proper diet, avoiding exposure to cold water and direct ultraviolet radiation are also important considerations following a scald. With proper and scientific management, the damage caused by scalding can be minimized to the greatest extent.
