Is applying toothpaste effective for mouth ulcers?
Disease description:
The pain from my mouth ulcer has been quite severe these past few days. A friend suggested applying toothpaste to relieve the discomfort. May I ask if applying toothpaste is effective for treating mouth ulcers?
There are differing opinions regarding the effectiveness of applying toothpaste on oral ulcers. On one hand, toothpaste containing herbal ingredients may exert local anti-inflammatory and swelling-reducing effects, helping to alleviate pain from the lesion. Toothpaste with propolis can form a protective layer, preventing secondary infection and promoting healing. On the other hand, toothpaste is primarily intended for cleaning teeth and is not significantly effective in treating oral ulcers. Moreover, certain ingredients in toothpaste might cause adverse reactions with medications used for oral ulcers or irritate the ulcerated area, thereby worsening symptoms and delaying healing. Therefore, although applying toothpaste may offer some relief for oral ulcers, it is not recommended as the primary treatment method. When oral ulcers occur, timely consultation at a hospital's dental department is advised to implement appropriate treatment measures.
