Why do mouth ulcers develop after eating pineapples?
Disease description:
I really love eating pineapples, but after eating just one, I developed a mouth ulcer. Why does eating pineapples cause mouth ulcers?
Mouth ulcers after eating pineapple are mainly caused by a special component in pineapple called bromelain. During consumption, bromelain may irritate the oral mucosa, particularly for individuals who are more sensitive to this enzyme, making them more prone to oral inflammation. The irritating effect of bromelain can cause mucosal ulcers, leading to oral discomfort such as mouth ulcers and soreness. To avoid this situation, it is recommended to soak pineapple in lukewarm salt water before consumption to remove some of the bromelain and reduce its irritation to the oral mucosa. Additionally, if oral ulcers have already developed, it is advisable to stop consuming pineapple immediately and take appropriate treatment measures, such as rinsing the mouth with salt water or using anti-inflammatory medications.
