Does hepatorenal syndrome in the late stage of cirrhosis cause lower back pain?
Disease description:
My father has cirrhosis and has recently developed lower back pain. I'm wondering whether this symptom could be caused by cirrhosis. Can hepatorenal syndrome in the late stage of cirrhosis cause lower back pain?
Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) in end-stage liver cirrhosis typically does not directly cause low back pain as a primary symptom, but it may be associated with back pain in certain situations. HRS in end-stage liver cirrhosis mainly presents as acute renal insufficiency on the basis of liver failure, with common symptoms including sodium and water retention, and hypertension. However, when HRS causes sodium and water retention or electrolyte disturbances, these factors may lead to muscle spasms or neuropathic pain, which could potentially cause low back pain. In addition, symptoms such as ascites that often accompany end-stage liver cirrhosis may exert pressure on the lower back, thereby causing pain. Overall, low back pain is not a typical symptom of hepatorenal syndrome in end-stage liver cirrhosis. If back pain occurs, other potential causes should be considered comprehensively, and timely medical evaluation and examination are necessary.
