White particles appearing on the oral mucosa may be caused by various factors. 1. They may be food debris that was not promptly cleaned after eating and remained in the mouth, forming white particles. In such cases, the particles can generally be removed by rinsing the mouth or drinking water. 2. They may be related to oral diseases such as oral retentions cysts (Fordyce granules), oral lichen planus, or oral leukoplakia, which can form white granular substances on the oral mucosa. Some of these conditions may be accompanied by pain or discomfort. For example, Fordyce granules are ectopic growths of sebaceous glands on the oral mucosa, forming pale yellow or white granules; oral lichen planus may be associated with immune or endocrine factors, presenting as white granular substances, sometimes accompanied by mucosal erosion or ulcers. 3. They may also be caused by fungal infections such as oral candidiasis (thrush), commonly seen in infants, young children, and elderly individuals with weakened immune systems. If you have any concerns, please consult a healthcare professional.
