What conditions can cause a low percentage of neutrophils?
Disease description:
Due to work-related reasons, I went to the hospital for a medical examination. The test results showed that my neutrophil percentage is low. What could this indicate?
A low percentage of neutrophils may be caused by various conditions, mainly including:
1. Infectious diseases: Such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, influenza, measles, and other viral infections, which may lead to a decrease in neutrophil count.
2. Hematologic disorders: Such as aplastic anemia, non-leukemic leukemia, and myelodysplastic syndromes, which affect the bone marrow's ability to produce blood cells, resulting in reduced neutrophil production.
3. Autoimmune diseases: Such as systemic lupus erythematosus, which may destroy neutrophils, leading to a decrease in their numbers.
4. Hypersplenism: Splenomegaly caused by various factors may lead to the destruction of white blood cells and platelets, with neutrophils among the primarily affected cells.
When the percentage of neutrophils is low, further investigation and treatment should be carried out based on the specific circumstances.
